episode 40. Budgeting works, folks!

On this episode, we revisit our favorite topic: budgeting! We talk about our renewed and super-effective focus on cutting frivolous spending down to a wee pile of dollars, and how we've aligned Mint to help us do that.

We also discuss a great set of Tools You Can Use, including Next Door and Facebook groups to find and acquire free stuff. This has been our favorite use of the sharing economy recently as we've gotten everything from storage bins to grapefruit at no cost!

Finally, we answer a listener question about games we like to play. This was exciting for us because we are dice and card game super-nerds. We chat about Qwixx, Settlers of Catan, Yahtzee, Five Crowns, Farkle, Spicy Farkle, and our dark-horse favorite, Lords of Waterdeep.

  1. Oh grrrrrreat one!! We have this! But haven’t played in ages – pre-kids I think! We should bust that out. It also might be that we haven’t played because Chris would crush me so after a few rounds it wasn’t very fun for me, womp womp. But I’m ready for a rematch!

  2. I haven’t been able to listen to the podcasts on my phone or tablet since Christmas (it just won’t load), so I’m just catching up on old episodes and I have a board game suggestion for you. It’s called Patchwork. It’s super quick and easy, but there is strategy involved. The best part is the theme: quilting!

  3. Oh shoot – I wonder if trying a different podcast player would help? Like Overcast? But thank you for this game suggestion; sounds right up our alley!

Ok, I’m still listening and you both just said you have already read Dark Matter and loved it! Ha! Next time I’ll wait until the episode is over before I comment. 🙂

  6. Haha – it just means your suggestions are spot on!

  7. Yamslam. A twist on Yahtzee. Mostly luck with a hint of strategy. Very quick and fun. Left center right is a fun dice game too. Even our three year old can play that one with the family with a little help. Zingo and Spot It are also great ones to play with your kids if you don’t already.
Love both of your podcasts, Kelsey. I’ve decided I’ve officially entered into adulthood now that I prefer “talk radio” over music in the car. ;0) Anyway, please keep them coming!

  8. This sounds like such a fun game, putting it on our wishlist. I wish our library checked out games…! We love Zingo and Spot It too! Thank you so much for listening and adulting – ha!
