episode 60. Breaking up with Costco

In this episode, we talk about our year-long dalliance, and eventual break-up, with Costco. We also talk through a listener question about the tension between keeping a household 'minimal' and using bulk shopping as a way to save money. In life news, Kelsey chats about the joys of leaving summer in the rear-view mirror and heading into fall (with record-breaking cool weather and precipitation in Arizona this October). And Chris asks listeners for some help figuring out what to do with clothes that don't fit anymore.

  1. Very timely episode as our Costco membership expires this month, and I’ve been thinking about letting it lapse. I loved it in the beginning, but (1) the receipts always give me a heart attack, (2) I always feel this stress to use up everything immediately, and (3) we’ve been getting bored eating the same things over and over.
After I finished listening, I hopped on Mint, and low and behold, we’re spending an average of $200/month more since joining Costco. We have two growing kiddos, too, but they’re really not eating much more than a year ago. W
While there are a few things from Costco I love that I can’t find elsewhere (the organic brown basmati rice and cauliflower crust pizza), it’s worth living without for a bit to see if we can save on groceries again.
Side note – I love the podcast, and I’ve been listening for about two years. Keep up the awesome work!

  2. Hi Lauren! Thank you so much for listening, we love to hear that! Yes, sounds like you’re having a similar experience as us. One little loophole if you have some items you would be sad to let go of would be to find a friend with a membership and go with them occasionally for just those items. I was thinking we might do that occasionally although I have to say I haven’t felt compelled enough to do it since this summer so maybe that is saying something! And it’s true, you can always renew if you miss it too much.
